Hand-me-downs

Friday, May 16, 2008

Last year, my sister-in-law cleaned out her closet and sent some of her old clothes over to my house for the girls to include in their box of princess gowns, capes, and other fun things to wear while playing.

(Or, if you’re Elegant, whenever you damn well feel like wearing a pink fur.)

That particular pile of cast-offs led to a pretty amazing fashion show. I encourage you to click over and read that post. (For a most excellent alternate version of what happened, click here.)

So when my sister-in-law walked in earlier this week with a bag of clothes for the girls, I initially thought there were more dresses and fun things. It turns out that the bag had only t-shirts, blouses, and sweaters. My SIL said she wasn’t even sure that the girls would want the shirts, except that Elegant (the child who usually wears only dresses) has always loved her aunt’s shirts.

The girls came home some time later and I showed them the bag of clothes, which the Boy had helpfully strewn across the living room. Makes looking at everything all that much easier.

The girls went nuts over their aunt’s shirts and immediately started sorting them. I figured that the girls would wear the shirts to sleep in, but it turns out that the shirts aren’t actually all that large on them.

(My SIL is a petite woman.)

(Bitch.)

(But I still adore her.)

So, nearly every day this week, my children have gone to school looking something like this:

Heaven help me when their shoes are the same size as their aunt’s.

Aww they look so cute but I miss the pink furs and flowers with stripes and all the other deliciously wacky adorable combinations they come up with!

Flutterby: Have no fear, Elegant has not abandoned her usual wild choices; she’s just adding in some new options. As for Graceful, she simply does not match her clothes at all, so even simple t-shirts and pants can clash in ways almost unimaginable.

Yes, heaven help you when those little girls realize their feet fit will fit into a pair of heels…
