Good and bad at the Tarzhay
Wednesday, May 14, 2008
I went on an epic Target journey on Wednesday. I can’t remember the last time my list was so. very. long. Seriously, Pete might just crap his pants when he sees the receipt.
The fine folks at Target must have known I was coming, as they managed to mark down loads of stuff I was planning to buy and things I wouldn’t have thought of buying but did since they were on sale.
Some examples:
Good: Goldfish crackers on sale for $1.50/bag. I bought four bags.
Bad: The price of Annie’s bunny-shaped pasta is now $1.27/box, up from 99 cents.
Better: It’s still less expensive at Tarzhay than it is at Whole Foods. I bought four boxes.
Good: M&Ms on sale for 3 bags/$7.
Bad: I have had a re-commitment ceremony with my spouse Weight Watchers. (Okay, actually that’s a GOOD thing.)
Good/Bad: M&Ms has reintroduced the cherry flavored ones, which I love.
Really bad: I bought four bags of M&Ms in four different flavors.
Better: I buried the M&Ms deep within the pantry.
Not so good: I sampled 2 points’ worth as I was mixing the four flavors in a big Tupperware container.
Good: My caffeine was on sale.
Better: I drink only one-half bottle in the morning, instead of the entire thing. It’s worth the 2 WW points to get my brain fired up. Essentially, this blog is powered by Starbucks. Perhaps you should bow to them in gratitude.
Bad: I couldn’t find an archery set, which the girls have been nagging me to get.
Good: I bought them a lacrosse set instead.
Hypothetical bad: Elegant whipping the lacrosse ball into one of her sister’s eyes and us having to make an emergency trip to the ER to have her eyeball put back in place.
Hypothetical Good: At least the ER trip would be covered by insurance.
Good: Simple bathing suit cover-ups for the girls for $9.99/each.
Even better: My favorite t-shirts were on sale for $6/each. I bought three. I know, I’m such a big spender.
Bad: I couldn’t find shorts for Graceful. Well, there were plenty there, but I would prefer that my daughter’s bum be covered when she goes out in public.
Good: I found cute notebooks for the girls to use as summer journals.
Also good: I bought loads of chips, salsa, beer, and other snacks for a family reunion in New Yawk State later this month. (Pete’s Yankee family, not my Southern kin. If it were my family, I’d be using Velveeta-based recipes and pulling out my casserole dishes.)
(Just kidding. We’re more refined than that. We use American cheez instead.)
Great: I picked up some Trip Fairy loot for the seven hour drive to the family gathering.
Excellent: Keeping two girls happily, quietly, peacefully entertained during a fourteen hour round trip journey in one weekend.
Bad: Pete broke one of our toilet plungers on Tuesday.
Good: I bought a replacement.
Sad: This will probably please him as much as it does me. Where is the romance?!
Really sad: Graceful noticed the new plunger when she came home and even she was excited. Clearly, we Jenworld residents need to get out more often — and not just to Tarzhay.
So that’s the thrilling recap of my trip to Tarzhay. Don’t forget to enter the contest, if you haven’t already.

Wow, I can’t believe you can buy chips and beer weeks in advance of an event and not have them get eaten up. You all must have a lot of self control.

I envy you, since I am so far from a Target! But it’s probably a good thing for my budget!

Oh man, that store is soooo dangerous. I try to limit myself to once a month and that receipt doesn’t ever get smaller except after we quit infant formula and again after we quit diapers.

Dick’s Sporting Goods sells an inexpensive archery set….in case you’re still in the market.
I love trip fairy loot!

I love a store that carries toilet plungers, pasta and lacrosse sets.
And my Southern family prefers Cheez Whiz baked into every dish. We are Klassy. And skinny.

Haha - the plunger made me laugh.
What are goldfish crackers - are they in the shape of fish? What flavour are they?
I love the sound of bunny pasta!

I just went to Tarzhay yesterday and ran into a mommy friend there. We both pointed out that all of the girls shorts are too short! And I see that you noticed that too!

I miss Tarzhay. I love their commercials. We don’t have anything as classy as that - just Wal-Mart.
BTW - how does one break a toilet plunger?

4 bags of M&Ms = one week’s supply around here. And that is precisely why I retrain from buying M&Ms no matter how good the price!
I am also amazed that you can buy beer and chips long in advance of a trip. I think I’d polish those off before I even started in on the M&Ms.
Girls’ shorts are ludicrous these days. They’re either skimpy hooker-style or bermuda style. Whatever happened to mid-thigh? Girls clothes get smaller and smaller and boys clothes get bigger and bigger.

Enjoyable post and I’m realizing how lucky we are to have a couple of Target stores nearby. I don’t think I’ve appreciated them nearly enough. (Mind you, I’m at a different stage of life than most of you, so my needs will be a little different. You can eat M&Ms no matter how old you are, though. Fun!
