A contest!

I am hereby announcing a contest.
My contest is similar to one at Domestic Hiss last month. (Hey, if I see a good idea, I am so going to “borrow” it.)
I am going to give away a gorgeous cookbook that has particular significance to me.
(Stop snickering. I do occasionally use a cookbook.)
Here it is:
Jan Karon is not only the well-known author of the Mitford books, she is also a resident of my particular little town. I’ve had the opportunity to meet her and she is an absolutely wonderful woman. Very friendly and gracious and just oh-so-Southern.
Because I have enjoyed Miss Karon’s books and because she lives nearby, various people have had the same thought that I might enjoy this cookbook and I now find myself in possession of more copies than I need.
Jan Karon’s Mitford Cookbook & Kitchen Reader is a compilation of the recipes mentioned in the various Mitford stories. This is Southern cooking at its finest and sure to raise your cholesterol levels, but also make you very popular among your friends and acquaintances, as everyone will want you to cook for them.
Don’t let that deter you! You can always say no and just cook for your own damn self, although that would be a waste of some fine down-home cooking.
So, here are the rules of the contest:
- I’ll post a question for everyone to answer.
- You leave your answer in the comments. Feel free to use Google to get your answer.
- I will close comments on Sunday and hold a drawing that day to select a winner from among the correct guesses.
- Then I’ll post the winner here on Monday, followed by actually mailing the book to that person and writing a note to her/him inside the front cover. (International readers should feel free to participate; I’ll happily mail to you too.)
- The winner will then try some of the recipes and blog about them. (If the winner does not have a blog, she/he can guest post here.)
- The winner will then have a contest of her/his own to find the next person to send the cookbook to and then send it to that person with a note inside the front cover.
- Repeat … forever.

Here’s a hint: I blogged about this very same vegetable recently. As in, within the past month. In fact, I mentioned two variations on it within the same post.

What a great idea for a contest! I remember that post and like TJ, your girls love English Peas! But I actually remembered the post more because of all the gagging and protesting that went along with the sugar snap peas!

I remember this one from a school history project, that I did on Thomas Jefferson, many, many years ago. Yes, even in NZ we studied the American Presidents.
It was green peas. Until then, I didn’t know that they were also known as English peas. Apparently he was also a fan of figs. A man after my own heart, on that count.

Okay, I researched it. It looks like it is peas. Speaking of cookbooks, the article I read mentioned that their family used the cookbook “The Virginia Housewife”. That sounds like a fun cookbook to see.

Pea is for Poppy! And that was my favorite vegetable when I was growing up. My birthday dinner was lamb chops, mashed potatoes, and peas.
Yes, I was a gourmet then, too.

History (and the Monticello website) tell us that T Jeff and I both like PEAS!
I like mine especially with mashed potatoes. I also like them mixed with Spaghetti Squash, chunks of ham and a light parmesan sauce!
