In the bedroom

It’s time for us to share some personal stuff here at Jen on the Edge. Specifically, I want to know about your bed.

No, not WHAT you do in it, but WHAT SIZE it (the bed — you pervs) is.

Pete and I sleep in a full size, which I’m guessing is abnormally small for married people with 16-ish years of togetherness under their belts.

In the beginning, there were twin beds — one each in our respective college bedrooms. Note that I have mentioned two different beds in two different rooms, because we would never ever cohabitate or anything like that before we got married. (Hey, don’t call me Pinocchio! Would I lie to you? Hell yes I would. No I would not.) We got so used to those teeny beds that anything larger would have been pure decadence, akin to a vibrating bed with satin sheets and a mirror on the ceiling overhead.

When we were engaged legally and lawfully married, we got a full size bed — in fact, the same one that currently takes up space in the Jenworld master bedroom. The bed itself is a Colonial four-poster and was our first nice piece of furniture.

(Can you imagine it? We had a combination of hand-me-down and el cheapo furniture on which we played quarters with entertained our college drinking buddies guests, and the nicest piece of furniture was hidden away in a bedroom. We should have just hosted people in bed — John and Yoko style.)

Our bed has been very comfortable all these years, with a few exceptions.

The first time was when I was pregnant with Graceful and my ginormous bloated beautiful belly took up an inordinate amount of space. Let’s just say it’s not a good thing when an unborn child can kick her father awake in the middle of the night. Graceful slept with us for a couple of weeks after she was born, but she by and large preferred her crib to sharing with us. Maybe it was because Pete snored? So Pete and I went back to a two-person-zero-baby/belly bed.

The next time the Jenworld marital bed seemed a bit snug was when I was pregnant with Elegant. Cue in the large belly, plus add in numerous pillows to support my belly, back, hips, and all other body parts. Rolling over at night involved me fully waking up, steeling myself for major exertion, and then rolling over in a ten-point maneuver that also involved grunting. No, Pete didn’t sleep so well. But he didn’t complain too much once I mentioned giving him a vasectomy my own damn self, as he is a smart man who knows when to back away from the crazy woman loving and caring husband.

Then, Elegant was born and decided that she wasn’t really ready to be separated from me and that her preferred sleeping spot was wherever I happened to be. Pete and I would carefully place her between us in our bed and then spend the rest of the night hanging off the edges of the mattress whilst young El (weighing in at a mere nine pounds) took up all of the prime real estate. It took only a couple of nights of this before Pete decided that he belonged in a spare bed across the hall. And I agreed missed him greatly.  Elegant and I slept in spatial splendor until a couple of months later when Pete reasserted his martial rights we decided it was time for the baby to sleep on her own.

From that time on, the Jenworld marital bed has been a two adult-zero child space. Occasionally, a child would wander across the hall and climb in with us, but we’d let her wiggle and squirm for a few minutes and then take her back to the perfectly good pink princess bed that she’d just vacated. Eventually, the girls realized that we are not a family of co-sleepers and that if they want company, they’ll have to wait until they’re over 18 and at college sleep with their stuffed animals and American Girl dolls.

In the past couple of years, Pete and I have discussed getting a larger. A queen size, not king, which is just too damn big. We talk about it only, because we’re too lazy to actually do anything about it we prefer our own cozy little spot where we can’t help but sleep snuggled together like rats in a cage in marital bliss. When we travel, hotel rooms always have either queen or king sized beds, so we like to test our theory that queen size would work better for us but king is too large. What invariably happens, however, is that I gripe mightily over even the queen sized bed. I’m so used to sleeping with my conjoined twin that I miss him when he’s another 12 inches further away.

(Pete, on the other hand, revels in that extra space. Probably because it’s harder for me to kick him when he snores.)

While we were in England, every single bed we slept in was a queen or king, so my impressions of those larger beds are very fresh in my mind. Too big and too damn big. Plus, with Pete all those many inches away, my primary source of warmth in that damp and cold country was not immediately available to me.

(Again, Pete probably does not concur.)

(Note to Hen: If you’re going to put king beds in your house, for heaven’s sakes, don’t use two single mattresses pushed together. It doesn’t work. Trust me on this one.)

So right now I’m not feeling too eager to buy a larger bed. What we have is fine with me except for those nights when Pete snores directly in my ear all of the time.

So now it’s time for an informal poll to see what kinds of beds Jenworld readers like best: twin, full, queen, king, hammock, vibrating Playboy mansion bed, or something else entirely.

We have a king size but I think from comments made before that a UK king is a US queen?

  2. Patience says:

We have a queen sized bed that my mother-in-law gave us–she unloaded a bunch of her unwanted furniture on us when we got engaged. I could sleep in a double, though. King is too big, and I think King sized beds are ugly and take up too much floor space.

  3. Jennifer says:

Guider: The king beds we slept in were really big, so either they were custom ordered for big American butts or maybe your king = ours.

  4. blackbird says:

We have a queen size bed, we have always had a queen size bed, we will always have a queen size bed. K is six foot three – that’s a lot of leg and arm length and I prefer he keeps them in his own quadrant.

  5. Jen says:

King baby! It’s the only way to go.

  6. alison says:

I have a queen all to myself…except when I’m joined by two small girls and a cat.

I think it’s the best size for sharing with another adult. Or two small girls and a cat.

  7. Ree says:

Queen. But mostly so there’s room for the damn dog.

  8. erin says:

I have a full because that’s the size that fit into my first place – I considered it quite an upgrade from my twin! I mostly sleep alone, but on occasion I’ve found it to be umm, quite cozy and I’ve considered upgrading to a queen size, but for right now the full is fine.

And actually, my parents have always had a full – but my siblings (all married) have queens or kings and mock my parents’ choice of a full. I say: go with whatever is most comfortable for you and fits the best in your bedroom.

  9. The Guider says:

Our king size is 5 ft wide, if that helps with a comparison. The bed in the spare bedroom is a standard double and that is 4ft 6.

  10. Kristin says:

We have a king. Have had it for 22 of our 23 years and I am *desperate* to downgrade but hubby is reluctant to scrap the whole operation and start from ground zero–reluctant because it would cost money : )

On the other hand, our 3 kids have always had room to snuggle with us in the morning and even now occasionally (ages 22, 20 and 12) all 3 will end up lying on top of the bed talking to us. It’s all very “awwww” now : )

  11. Sarah says:

Actually the first “Adult” purchase I made when I landed my first job was a queen size bed..that was 14 years ago and is what my husband and I are still sleeping on.

  12. daysgoby says:

Queen. We recently bought a new mattress that is so nice that now the whole family likes to sneak in at night….

  13. MomBabe says:

We have a queen. I’d love a king cause I like my space, but it won’t fit in my bedroom. sigh.

  14. Lacey Bean says:

We have a Queen. It’s Dave’s from his apartment, I had a full but it was too small for us! Dave likes to sprawl (he’s 6ft, etc), and I like to curl into a ball.

If money and space allowed, we’d get a King. I’m not for intertwining bodies during sleep time. There is an invisible line that should not be crossed. :)

  15. barbra says:

We have a queen. We know exactly what you are talking about with the college twins, and we had a big, luxurious full size when we were first married.
That was what I wanted to keep, but The Hubby started complaining that he wanted more space. So we got a queen, which is the largest I am willing to have.
We already had the queen when we had pregnancies and babies in the bed. We felt very squished and hanging-off-the-side. I am amazed you did that in a full.

  16. Jan says:

Queen-size is the most popular, and purchased mattress size in the U.S. That’s what we’ve had for over 40 years. Not the same one, of course, the same size. For us, it’s perfect. I’m 5’6″, Bob’s 5’11″, queen-size gives us enough room, but we’re not in separate zip codes.

A word of advise, if you decide to purchase a larger mattress set. Go with all synthetic; the reason is bugs, BED BUGS. Bugs live on natural fibers, cotton, silk, wool. No natural fibers = no bugs in bed with you. I’m just saying, be smart.

  17. California King tempurpedic mattress, the most comfy mattress evah!

  18. flutterby says:

California King. Because it used to be a waterbed and when the mattress finally gave out, and since I loved the whole set too much to get rid of it, we just got the Tempurpedic to fit it. I can’t sleep all crowded up so it works great for us. And whoever said king sized beds are *ugly*, that was kinda mean and inconsiderate. Just because you don’t like something, don’t insult those who do by saying something is *ugly*.

  19. Melissa says:

A king. We hate to touch each other while sleeping, so there is even a row of pillows right down the middle of the bed dividing us. No other size for me!

  20. Kristabella says:

I can’t believe you sleep in a full-sized bed. I have a queen. For JUST ME. And whenever I have, um, guests over, I can’t stand the lack of space. Almost 31 years sleeping my myself and I love sleeping right down the middle.

So IF I ever get married, a king-sized bed is the first thing on the list.

  21. Heidi says:

Definitely a King. And we are as far away from each other as possible. I do not want to be touched while sleeping. Cannot deal with it!!

My husband would think Pete to be the luckiest man alive being married to a woman who actually enjoys snuggling!

    Heidi :)

  22. Mrs. G. says:

We started with a full-size futon on the floor, moved up to a futon on a frame of plywood and milk crates, moved up to a futon on an actual futon frame, and, this year, bought a brand new queen sized pillow top mattress. I love it, because Mr. G. snores loudly, so I can put large pillows between us and over my head to absorb some of the sound. You might be surprised how much you like it-and it doesn’t feel so big once you get used to it.

  23. Peggy says:

California King..Which came in handy during the “YEAR OF THE HOT FLASH AND NIGHT SWEATS HORROR” . Mr. Diva had his side and I had mine.

  24. We have a king, and I love it. I need my space.

  25. Amy says:

I have a Queen that I share with my cat, who sleeps on my feet. I always sleep on the very edge, so really, I should just have a single, but that would be really really lame.
Bed of dreams: A king size canopy bed with floaty fabric in a huge bedroom overlooking a sunny beach. xx

  26. We have a queen size Sleep Number bed — every time we sleep on a King size, we feel like we’re flailing about in open seas, but in a full size, we’re constantly kicking feet and jabbing elbows for the prime spots.

  27. TX Poppet says:

Moved up to a Queen five years ago. I think it’s too much bed. Just because we have the room for a bigger bed doesn’t mean we need one, y’know? Like Ree, I use the dog to fill up the empty spaces. Somehow I don’t think that would happen chez Jen ;-)

  28. The Brujo bought a queen sized when we started dating and it became clear to him that I would not spend the night at his house if I had to sleep on a futon that was essentially a large dog bed.

He is asleep in it now and I should log off and go join him.

You gots a lotta comments on your blog! I have some serious catching-up to do.

  29. Jen says:

i’m late to the party here, but my vote is for a queen.

if you don’t want to give up the closeness, opt for 1,000 thread ct sheets. or egyptian cotton. you’ll sleep like a queen in a full sized bed!!
